Treasure troves lined the interior and exterior walls of Open Space during First Friday's

Night Market, where local vendors setup shops, creating a miniature world of wonders to behold and admire. The doors were left open as we welcomed in the sun and the fresh air, along with countless talented vendors, generous enough to share their work with us. Several rugs warmed the cold concrete floors as visitors received free face-painting and stepped into pop-up boutique shops, and a wall-less record store. In the corner of the studio, palms of introspective customers were read as local beloved, DJ Sorski, spun hit records inside a circle of boxes filled with vinyl classics, accessible for all to sift through.

The Night Market encompasses all shopping favorites- food, gems and beverages. Crystals and clothing were scattered about the room to poke through, as the indulgent scent of burgers and tropical margaritas filled the summer air with a satisfying sensory frenzy. A plethora of talented artists lingered onsite to tender inspiration to those who came into their presence. It was clear how much they had dedicated themselves to every piece displayed- whether they showcased wall art, custom-made jewelry or delicately dipped chocolate-marshmallow-pretzel cakes. The passion and love for one's craft was inevitable. The level that the Night Market's vendors rose to had everyone in awe; their unique individualism acknowledged even simply with a smile, in passing by onlookers.

It’s difficult to say if sipping a cocktail that featured a flower inside your cup was cooler than trying on a vintage leather vest, and it's challenging to decide whether the smash burger was more of a hit than the addicting lobster rolls were that evening. Luckily, there is no competition for what truly matters, which is the quality of the interactions between everyone who entered into The Night Market at Open Space, and the energy within the community that we all experienced. Everything combined, beneath the moonlight certainly contributed to the emulation of what we all could insist was a perfect summer evening.

We can’t wait to share another night like this with you!

Stay tuned for more details about our next Night Market, happening October 21st 2022.

Because one night just wouldn’t be enough, Jake Woodmansee has generously dedicated three entertaining evenings in a row to you, Central Oregon! Each night will be a completely different show with weekend passes available for $50 to catch the entire series. Come down to all three shows and increase your likelihood of being one of the pretty faces featured in the filming of this weekend. On Thursday August 25th Jake commences his 3-night special with Story Time, by telling the tale of his ridiculously outrageous real-life experiences which ultimately led to a career in comedy. Prepare yourself to be shocked by wit and awed by his chronicles of being hit by not 1 but 3 drunk drivers and stitched up with over 300 sutures. The hilarious Ramya Hip is Woodmansee’s opening act for the evening, featuring Tylor Jones and his expansive collection of bizarre and acute observations!

On Friday, August 26th Jake presents Agro Hippies with the musical brilliance of Steven Whitney. The pair works together in musical unison as Whitney plays music unknown to Jake who then will be acting out scenes. As improv typically goes, there is reliance on audience suggestions to choose between topics. Only this improv includes a free drink to the audience member who suggests a subject Jake can’t perform. Come keep him on his toes!!

For the finale on Saturday, August 27th the Knight of Comedy, Keith Eric Sennette opens with an arduous and charming appeal. Bend’s favorite MC, Dustin Riley will be cheering on the crowd and playing the best of upbeat tunes between scenes. Tylor Jones reenters the stage a last time, as he is joined by the talented, John Rioche from Central Oregon Comedy Scene.

This event is going to be filmed so audience members will be agreeing to release of content use upon entry. All proceeds go directly to Casey Somsel, a local Bendite who is currently battling cancer. Admission is $20 pre-sale and $25 at the door. But a weekend pass is only $50 so act fast and snag the tickets that are still available!

Doors open at 7:30pm for all show nights. Show begins at 8pm. Brief intermission between opening acts and Jake’s main performances to allow for snacks and refreshment time. If at some point you are too intoxicated to drive we will gladly arrange your safety with Coiled Cabs. While minors are eligible for entry, please know this is an R rated show and not for the easy offended.

Out of Thin Air improvising a rock show scene | August 3rd 2022

To the left of a dimly lit stage crowds Renny Temple and his powerhouse improv group, OUT OF THIN AIR. They lean in, in a kind of confidential huddle before entering the light of the stage as enthusiasm fills the room. Audience members applaud as Temple introduces the group, who are quick to transform into alternative characters at a moment’s notice throughout the show.

With the help of audience feedback, the team is prompted by suggestions on scenes such as the location the scene is set in, or the activity the character is performing, and so on.

The audience begins choosing a character’s profession and the suggestions swiftly lead to an elaborate narrative. One scene involved a character who was of southern heritage, with a rodeo background, currently on vacation in New York City. This self-identified cowboy character was on his way to visit the MnM Store, alongside a sassy rodeo queen on his arm. As you may have guessed, anything peculiar is within reach and no oddity is off limits in the name of improvisational comedy.

Despite the fluidity of a craft that calls for random submissions, the players react willingly to every one, as if they had accepted the challenge ahead of time. They each rely on an instinct Temple and his group prove is within us all if we learn how to listen to it, or maybe more veraciously, if we learn how to let it listen to us. By allowing inner creativity to dominate the moment without hesitation; sans self-critic analyzing everything one says and does, an immense power is obtained by the player who experiences true freedom from their egoic mind. Scenes start flowing and comic timing is perfected with the group's shared allowance for space to make mistakes. All the while, games are quickly played by players consistently maintaining an interactive intimacy with a less than shy audience, eager to shout-out what the next scene entails... because when you come to a night of Improv with OUT OF THIN AIR, you are playing too.
